When NASA first sent astronauts into space, they knew ordinary ballpoint pens wouldn’t work in zero gravity.

Consequently they spent millions of dollars developing a pen that would not only do that, but also write upside down and in extreme temperatures. Faced with the same problem, the Soviet cosmonauts were given pencils.
